Hi, I’m John, and at Knutsford Stained Glass, I offer a specialist encapsulation service to help preserve and protect your stained-glass panels. If you’ve got an original panel you’d like to keep but need to upgrade your windows, I can encapsulate the stained glass into a modern double-glazed unit – without losing any of its charm or character.
The process involves carefully preparing the panel, soldering a y-shaped edge lead around it so it sits securely in the centre of the unit. If any glass is cracked or broken, I’ll match and replace it by hand before thoroughly cleaning and polishing the panel, ready for encapsulation.
If we’re working on a new commission that’s going into a double-glazed unit, I’ll make sure it’s created with the correct edge lead from the outset, so it’s ready to be fitted straight away.
If you’re planning on having new window frames fitted, current building regulations often require encapsulation for stained glass — although there are exceptions in conservation areas. If you’re not sure what applies to your home, just get in touch and I’ll be happy to advise.
